Residents of several rural communities in Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State may soon find relief from persistent water scarcity following a new intervention by the lawmaker representing Song Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Kefas.

The initiative, which involves the drilling of hand-pump boreholes , is expected to expand access to clean and safe drinking water in more than seven communities across the local government area.

For years, residents, particularly women and children have been forced to trek long distances under harsh weather conditions in search of water, often returning with supplies considered unsafe for consumption. The situation has been linked to recurring cases of water-borne diseases in the affected communities.

Speaking on the project, Kefas said the intervention is aimed at complementing government efforts to address the challenges of water supply in rural areas.

According to him, the project goes beyond providing access to water, noting that it will also help improve sanitation, protect public health, and restore dignity to rural households.

“Access to clean and safe water is a basic necessity of life. This project is part of my commitment to compliment Government's efforts to improving the living conditions of our people and ensuring that rural communities are not left behind in development,” he said.

Community leaders have welcomed the development, describing it as timely and long overdue.

A traditional leader in one of the benefiting communities Abba Aliyu Dakinito said access to clean drinking water has remained one of their most pressing challenges for years.

“Our people have suffered for a long time due to lack of clean water. Women and children often walk several kilometres just to fetch water that is not even safe to drink,” the district head said.

Residents expressed hope that the ongoing drilling of the boreholes will bring lasting relief, saying the availability of clean water will significantly improve their living conditions and overall well-being.
